Marine Industry Repair and Maintenance

Whether on the high seas or docked, repair and maintenance activities aboard ship present a unique set of circumstances for maintenance crews and operators.

Belzona is accepted by the American Bureau of Shipping, U.S. Navy, U.K. Ministry of Defence, Italian Registry of Shipping, Lloyd's Register of Shipping, Class NK, Bureau Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd, Polish Register of Shipping and China Classification Society.

Belzona's Advanced Polymers can be used to repair and protect a wide variety of equipment and areas onboard ship, and the following applications represent only a fraction of what can be accomplished through the use of Belzona.

In the Engine Room

engine casing repair - beforeengine casing repair - after

A connecting rod went through the crankcase of this ship's diesel engine casing. The holed casing was repaired quickly and easily with a Belzona® 1000 Series Metallic Polymer and a steel backer plate, saving thousands on the cost of replacement as well as weeks of dry-dock time. This repair was completed by the ship's crew under the guidance of the local, factory-trained Belzona Consultant.

pipe work onboard shipEngine liner seals

Engine liner seals suffer from erosion. A traditional repair would involve the replacement of these liners. However, through the utilization of Belzona, the liners can be repaired quickly and cost effectively, by the ship's standing crew.

Belzona polymers are ideal for emergency repairs to most pipe work onboard ship, such as coolant hose leaks, seawater leaks and air line leaks. In most cases, these repairs can be executed without securing the system.

Propulsion

Kort nozzles bi-metallic corrosion

Kort nozzles suffer from bi-metallic corrosion where the wear ring meets the nozzle body. A traditional repair would involve additional welding, thereby exacerbating the bi-metallic corrosion problem in the future. Through the use of the Belzona® 1000 Series Metallic Polymers, this problem can be repaired for one-tenth the cost of the traditional shipyard repair. Due to Belzona Polymer's high di-electric properties, the bi-metallic corrosion problem can be eliminated.

tail shafts damage - beforetail shafts damage - after

Traditional repairs to tail shafts damaged by gland packing often require expensive and specialized flame spray repair techniques. By using a Belzona® 1000 Series Metallic Polymer, the shaft can be quickly and cost effectively repaired without subjecting the tail shaft to thermal distortion.

Maneuvering

worn rudder stockrudder stock repair

This rudder stock was worn by the spring loaded seal, causing water intrusion into the steering gear space.

A paste-grade, 1000 Series Metallic Polymer was used to reform the seal area, thus avoiding the cost and inconvenience of replacement, or welding and machining. This type of repair can be completed in a matter of hours, whereas the conventional repair would have required several days, and hundreds of man-hours.

Hull and Deck

tugboat fender repairtugboat fender repair

This tugboat fender was split-in-half from the continuous impact cycles with other vessels as part of its normal function.

The tugboat operator utilized a resiliant Belzona 2000 Series Elastomeric Polymer and easily bonded the fender back together, avoiding the high replacement cost of a new fender.

Auxiliary Areas

A hole in the cutwater of this split case pump rendered this essential piece of equipment unusable.

To execute the Belzona repair, a steel mesh was used to form a backing to which a paste-grade Belzona® 1000 Series Metallic Polymer was applied, fully restoring the cutwater to "like new" condition, and saving the customer considerable cost and time.
