Metal Rust Protection Types
One of the most common types of metal corrosion is rust. Aluminum corrosion is not the same thing as iron or steel corrosion. In the case of aluminum corrosion the effect is not so bad and the rust only affects the surface of the aluminum, making it a passive process. Metal rust protection is performed by protective coatings that are applied on the metals surface, for a better protection against the attacks of external factors like oxygen and water.
Corrosion control is done when applying a thick layer of paint to isolate the metal from the environment. Massive structures like ships or modern automobiles have a chemical inhibitor applied, forming a barrier. Modern metal rust protection is made by coatings with high concentration of aluminum. The aluminum will cover all the metals imperfections like scratches and offer better protection for the metal witch the protective coating is applied on.
Metal rust protection can be performed by other methods, not just applying a layer of coating on the metal. Cathodic protection is one of the most known methods to protect the metal from the effect of water. This technique controls the corrosion on the surface of the metal by making the surface the cathode of an electrochemical cell. This metal rust protection is used to protect steel, water and fuel lines, ships or even offshore oil platforms. Another protection system is called bluing. This technique offers limited resistance to rusting for small steel objects, by rubbing water-displacing oil on the piece of steel.
Metal rust protection can be performed even with covering the piece of metal with concrete. The protection from corrosion is made by the high pH environment formed by the steel-concrete interface.
