Many Uses For Silicone Sealants

Although people rarely appreciate them, silicone sealants are an integral part of our buildings and structures. Silicone is used for valve sealants, window and door sealants, and many other purposes. It is used to close up gaps joints and crevices in buildings, to keep the elements out and keep moisture from plumbing in.

One-part silicone sealants absorb moisture, making them easy to install. Since it will not stick to wet and soapy areas, professional installers can apply some soapy water to window panes when they are applying window and door sealants, for example, and it will only stick where it is supposed to.

Silicone sealants are commonly used in the construction industry because they are strong and reliable, but they are not used in automotive and paint industries because they can cause severe failures. Because of its success with valve sealants, however, it is common in the marine industry. Aquarium manufacturers have used silicone exclusively since it was introduced to join glass plates.

So, the next time you are appreciating a strong building, a secure valve, a dry ship or a beautiful aquarium, remember the silicone that made it possible.
