Belzona SuperWrap II

Composite repair system for restoring the strength of holed, weakened and corroded pipe and tank walls.

Belzona SuperWrap II

The composite wrap system, Belzona SuperWrap II, offers a new generation repair solution for restoring the strength of holed, weakened and corroded pipe and tank walls. The composite wrap is comprised of a 100% solids resin system, a bespoke hybrid reinforcement sheet, based on fibre glass and carbon fibre, as well as a release film to compact and consolidate the application.

The tank and pipe repair system is available in four different resin grades, Belzona 1981, Belzona 1982, Belzona 1983 and Belzona 1984, making it suitable for applications in various environments and climates. It is also suitable for service temperatures ranging from -60 °C (-76 °F) up to 150 °C (302 °F).

Belzona SuperWrap II is specially designed to facilitate the fast and simple, in-situ repair of through-wall and thin-wall defects on pipes and tank walls. The composite wrap technology can even be applied in aqueous environments. It is a reliable alternative to welding and mitigates the need to replace defective metallic substrates, whilst providing superior strength, chemical and corrosion resistance. The composite wrap allows for quick and easy repair of equipment within various industries, including oil and gas, power generation and marine.

APPLICATIONS

  • Compliant or conventional Belzona SuperWrap II composite wrap system for the repair of complex geometries of pipes including bends, straights and tees
  • Compliant or conventional, wet-applied Belzona SuperWrap II composite patch for composite patch repairs of large diameter pipes (over 60 cm (23.6 in)) and tank walls
  • Conventional, prefabricated and pre-cured composite plate manufactured from Belzona SuperWrap II for plate bonding applications
  • Conventional, prefabricated and pre-cured composite pad designed using Belzona SuperWrap II for pipe support - this can be overcoated with an erosion-resistant coating, for example, Belzona 1331, for additional protection and can be formed on site, resulting in minimum lead time

What is ISO 24817 testing?

ISO 24817 testing refers to the standardised qualification and performance testing of composite repair systems for metallic pipes and pipelines suffering from external corrosion or mechanical damage. This standard ensures that the repair method is structurally sound, long-lasting, and safe under defined pressure and temperature conditions.

Belzona SuperWrap II has been tested and fully qualified to ISO 24817, demonstrating that it can restore or maintain the structural integrity of pipework in line with strict industry requirements for both design and application.

Are composite wraps compliant with ISO or ASME standards?

Yes, Belzona SuperWrap II is fully compliant with both:

  • ISO 24817 (for composite repairs of metallic pipework)
  • ASME PCC-2 Article 4.1 (which governs non-metallic composite repair systems)

This compliance assures asset owners that Belzona SuperWrap II meets globally recognised standards for performance, reliability, and safety, including under high-pressure, high-temperature, and hazardous service conditions.

What is the purpose of a pipe wrap?

The purpose of a pipe wrap like Belzona SuperWrap II is to:

  • Restore structural integrity to damaged, corroded, or leaking pipes
  • Extend the service life of pipelines without the need for shutdown or replacement
  • Contain pressure and reinforce weakened areas
  • Provide a non-intrusive, cold-applied repair that avoids hot work

It's commonly used in oil & gas, petrochemical, marine, and utilities where traditional welding or replacement may not be feasible or safe.

What is a composite pipe repair system?

A composite pipe repair system is a solution that uses high-performance composite materials typically a combination of a reinforcement fabric (like carbon or glass fiber) and a polymeric resin to reinforce or restore pipework affected by corrosion, erosion, or mechanical damage.

Belzona SuperWrap II is an engineered composite system that:

  • Is custom designed for each application based on pressure, temperature, and pipe geometry
  • Provides structural reinforcement and pressure containment
  • Offers a cold-applied, rapid-curing alternative to cutting and welding
What material is used for pipeline wrapping?

Belzona SuperWrap II uses a high-strength composite system composed of:

  • Reinforcement fabric: Typically carbon fibre (for high-strength, high-performance needs) or glass fibre (for more general applications)
  • Epoxy resin: A specially formulated Belzona epoxy resin that bonds to the substrate and encapsulates the fibres
  • Release film: Used during the application process to ensure proper compaction and cure

The materials are selected and combined according to the specific design requirements of the repair (e.g., pipe diameter, pressure rating, environmental exposure).

Can composite wraps be used for high-pressure pipe repairs?

Belzona SuperWrap II is specifically engineered for high-pressure applications. It can be designed to handle:

  • Both through-wall and non-through-wall defects
  • Live repairs, meaning pipework can remain in service during application

The system is backed by full engineering calculations and third-party testing, providing assurance for use in critical service lines such as hydrocarbons, chemicals, steam, and water.
