The Industrial Repair Industry
Industrial protective coatings are defined as any type of paint or coating that protects. People in the industrial repair industry do not define these coatings by the way they look, but rather by the things that they do. There are many industrial coatings that also double as paint, but their main purpose is to act as a barrier rather than as any sort of decorative touch.
Industrial coatings are most well-known for their use in steel and concrete structures, to control corrosion. There are other functions of industrial protective coatings, though, such as for intumescent coatings that add fire resistance. These functions are important for factories, machines shops, auto shops and other industrial settings.
In the industrial repair industry, polymers and epoxies are the most common types of coatings, although there is another material known as fluoropolymer that is used. Some other types of industrial protective coatings include inorganic zinc, phosphate, Xylan and PVD coatings. There is even a society that acts as an authority figure on these products - The Society for Protective Coatings, which industry leaders can turn to for guidance and information.
