Roof Sealants
Sealants are materials that are used to prevent the passing of a substance through an opening or across a joint. Roof sealants are used with the purpose of preventing leaks and they may be used on regular homes, travel trailers, mobile homes. An unusual way of using roof sealants is to make fake rocks with them. It is something that people who have gardens in front of their house do to decorate them and what some children may use to throw at windows on April Fools.
There are different kinds of roof sealants, depending on their composition. A solvent based caulk sealant, synthetic rubber brush on, forms a flexible water resistant seal. It may be used for seams around vents, attached structures and vents. Asphalt-based sealants are usually proper for repairing minor roof leaks or with the purpose of preventing air and moisture from penetrating. Another kind of sealant is the elastomeric urethane sealant. This one will provide seals that are resistant to various weather conditions. The seals will not shrink or become fragile due to weather extremes or exposure to sun. Urethane roof sealants generally have the ability to adhere to various roofing substrates such as: aluminum, copper, stainless steel. They are especially useful when sealing dissimilar building materials. Synthetic rubber-based products are considered to last longer than asphalt roof sealants.
Features of roof sealants that are important are elasticity, adhesion abilities, resistance to weather and UV, invisibility and waterproof capacity. A sealant that is elastic will absorb the movement that the roof experiences. If it twists, it bends, stretches or compresses without cracking, then it is a good sealant. Sealants that are clear remain invisible when put over a tile, brick or shingles, so they have aesthetic value. Choosing among sealants must be carefully done though, since some roof sealants are great in certain situations but not recommended in others.
