Precautions When Using Wood Epoxy

Epoxy is a chemical substance, namely a polymer, that cures (or polymerizes) when mixed with another element, usually called the hardener. It has numerous applications, from marine industry to aerospace security. Since the beginning of the last century, epoxy has become a very commonly used substance, and nowadays it is sold in hardware stores, typically as two component kits. The most common usage of it is as an adhesive.

Wood epoxy is the variety of the substance used to repair certain damaged wood windowsills, door jambs, moldings or other types of wooden objects. The procedure of using wood epoxy is quite simple. All you have to do is mix the two components like a cookie, mold it like modeling a clay and wait for it to dry. After that, you can carve and sand it just like you do with the wood. Due to the fact that wood epoxy is formulated to flex and move with the wood on which it is applied, you can be sure it won't crack and fall out. However, a few restrictions apply and among those, the fact that you should apply epoxy with the maximum care says about it all. The wood has to be thoroughly dry, the place where the wood epoxy is going to be placed has to be prepared in advance, maybe even washed and dried afterwards. You have to use disposable brushes, plastic putty knives and scraps of wood to minimize the tool cleanup as well as plastic gloves to protect you hands and avoid accidents.

When using wood epoxy it is sometimes quite difficult to get the job done in an instant. Hence, you should not be surprised if a second application is required and try to repair what you were planning. There are even cases in which the part of an object which was repaired with wood epoxy outlived the respective object itself.
