How To Repair Concrete Cracks

There are many homeowners that have experienced the problem of cracks that have occurred in basement walls, leading to water leaks after heavy rain, or concrete floor cracks in front of the house (drive way, patio). Concrete crack repair is done in three steps: preparation, mixing the patching materials and applying the patch. One must take the weather conditions into account when starting this job. The preparation time involves checking for tapered sides that the hole might have. They affect the long term durability of the patch and that is why it is better to alter the sides of these holes. To do this, one may use a hammer and a chisel or a saw that has a masonry blade. Protection for eyes and ears is needed during the process. The next step in doing concrete crack repair is mixing the patching materials.

One must follow directions carefully. For most compounds, the purpose is to obtain the consistency of cake icing or very thick gravy. One must mix until an amount that can be applied in 15-20 minutes is ready. Concrete crack repair may be done using water based compounds for the patch. In this case, the surface that is to be patched must be wet first or a bonding agent should be used. If the hole is deep, hardened nails should be installed inside of it.

For very deep holes, a 1/2 inch diameter hole should be drilled and a 1/2 inch piece of steel should be pound inside. As a result, the patch will be held in place. At the end, the patched area should be finished and then covered with a piece of plastic for three or four days. Concrete crack repair jobs are best to be done when the sun is not burning strongly nor does it freeze outside. 55F, overcast and damp weather is appropriate for concrete crack repair procedures.
