How To Repair Composites

There are three important principles that must be understood when one intends to repair composites. By following these principles, success in completing projects and durability can be expected. The first principle is that repairs depend upon the adhesive feature of the resin that is used. When repairing, weaker resins than the one that was originally used shouldn't be chosen. The substitution should be made after previous testing. The second principle that must be taken into account when there is need to repair composites is that durability is increased proportionally with the surface. A greater surface area of the bond is also ensuring more strength of the reparation. The void may be filled by taper or scarf sanding, the surface area being increased in this way. Step sanding may be performed also. The third principle when trying to repair composites is that a ply-by-ply approach must be used.

Using identical materials in the same orientation for the damaged area is recommended. After understanding the principles, there are certain steps that should guide you when you repair composites. The first step regards inspection: the damage must be checked, the materials that are involved must be recognized and the choice of either replacing or repairing must be made. The next step is to remove the material that has suffered damages. This is the step in which the area is prepared for bonding. The third move is to laminate the repair patch. The forth step regards the inspection of the repair. This should be done before the part is put back in service. These steps are part of a first sequence involved in the repairing process. When you repair composites there is a second sequence that must be moved on to, and that is the cosmetic repair sequence. This must be done for aesthetical reasons as well as for the protection of the reinforcement.
